Hymenoptera

Wasp - There are over 30,000 species of wasp! So I will just stick to our common one here! Fossils of wasps have been found dating back to the Jurassic. They build nests of wood fibers which are chewed up so much they end up as a papery pulp. The queen lays eggs in the delicate nest and the newly formed wasps hatch in late summer. This colony chose one of my bird next boxes to build their nest in! Greaghnafarna Co. Leitrim.
