Red Squirrel - Native to Ireland. The other species the Grey Squirrel was introduced to Ireland in the early twentieth century. They are now in competition for food. The grey squirrel does much better foraging on the ground whereas the red is more adapt to feeding higher in the tree canopies. The red squirrel is a much smaller species. Around half the size of the grey. They continue to be in decline since the introduction of the grey. Photographed in an undisclosed area of Co. Leitrim.
