Anax imperator
Emperor - This striking dragonfly is widespread in England and has recently appeared in Ireland. I came across this one though in the Vilamoura reedbeds in the Algarve Portugal. It is often found around lakes and ponds where they hunt and breed. A large dragonfly which doesn't stay still too long and even occasionally eats on the wing.
