Natrix maura

Viperine Snake - Resembling an adder this snake also behaves like one. We wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't struck at us as we passed it on a sandy path in Quinta Do Lago in the Algarve Portugal. Despite its behaviour it does not bite and is quite harmless. It's a water snake found in rivers and lakes which are also sometimes brackish. Although these snakes can grow to a metre long this very young little chap was merely 75mm !! The photograph and video clip makes him look as aggressive as he thinks he is!
