Hoverflies - Most hoverflies cannot be recognised simply by sight. 180 different kinds of hoverfly have been recorded in Ireland. Here I will list a few with common names if possible. They are only a guide as most hoverflies have to be identified under microscopic conditions. They hover as the name suggests feeding on nectar and pollen. Seen in parks, gardens, hedgerows and almost anywhere! Photographs: mainly from Greaghnafarna Co. Leitrim.
